Fathoms Survey Department undertakes topographic surveys for a wide range of applications, both in the land and coastal environments.

Levels and positions are primarily acquired using RTK GPS systems such as the Trimble 5700 and Magellan Z-Max, coupled with ruggedised PDA’s or survey controllers. More traditional equipment such as total stations, theodolites and levels are also employed and in many cases a mixture of equipment is used to complete a project.

AutoCAD is used to present the data to suit client requirements with results then available in paper copy and/or as drawing and DXF files. Observations are also available as text files for incorporation into GIS packages.

Applications have included;

  • Surveys to calculate fill material on pre-construction sites.
  • Surveys to show general ground levels and gradients.
  • Borehole positions & levels.
  • Surveys of mudflats for pre-dredge volume calculations.
  • Surveys of beaches for replenishment works.
  • Surveys of streams/rivers for hydraulic modelling.
  • Surveys of breakwaters during construction.
  • Surveys of quarries for volume calculations.
  • Surveys to determine flood risk.

The use of RTK GPS has greatly increased the potential speed to acquire data, as it is now possible to mount the antenna on various types of vehicle, which can be chosen to suit the terrain. (Please see examples on the right.)
