Bathymetric surveying in the Orkney Islands
Throughout the summer Fathoms has been very busy conducting a multibeam bathymetric survey on behalf of the Orkney Council. The survey areas were extensive and covered the vast majority of Scapa Flow, Kirkwall Bay and numerous islands. Many interesting sites were surveyed including the majority of the sunken German fleet found within Scapa Flow along with some ‘unknown’ smaller wrecks. A number of high resolution images of this survey have been posted in our image gallery. The use of Applanix POSpac software utilizing UKHO’s local VORF model greatly improved the tidal reduction process which eliminated swath mismatch due to tidal errors. The survey data will be passed on to the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in order for them to update their Admiralty charts - parts of which are currently over 100 years old.
